What to do so that a hard drive crash or other failure does not become a “disaster”?
Yes, I am talking about the dreaded “back up” plan. We have been taught from the first time we started using a computer to always have a good “back up” habit, but honestly, how many of us actually do it? At PowerNotebooks.com we get calls from people who have had a hard drive crash or other fatal failure of their computer and it always happens at the most critical time. They want us to do the repair instantly, and want to call us funny names if we don’t. The real problem is that they did not have a good “back up” habit or plan, and then they come to us with misplaced expectations (hence the funny names). They expect to be able to get a top end high performance laptop that will never fail. Wait…that will never fail? While most of them will go for years without a failure, there are always a few that do have failures. We live in a world of electronics and gadgets and usually own two cars. Why do we own two cars? The reasons are because of the convenience and because we know that we may have a break down some day. This is where having a good back up plan comes necessary. I tell customers that are using their laptop for business or mission critical projects that they should actually have a 2nd computer available and a good back up plan in place. Taking your car in for repair is an inconvenience but rarely a disaster, but if your laptop ever needs repair it is too often a disaster unless you have a good back up plan. People say they don't have time to do a regular back up and can’t afford to have 2 computers…but they can afford to have 2 cars? The real key is to be prepared in the unlikely event of a computer failure. In the event you have to send your laptop in for repair having your data backed up so that you can borrow, rent or use another computer on to which you can simply load your applications and data exhibits proper planning.
